PORTUGAL – QUIET ROADS, MOUNTAINS AND LOWLANDS – 7 DAYS CYCLING.
Portugal is vibrant, colourful, cosmopolitan, and yet rustic in a beautiful way. Its a perfect country to run a cycle tour, as the roads are good, and the traffic light, especially in the rural eastern half of the country. Its sunny weather and Mediterranean Sea breezes provide the perfect atmosphere for a biking tour. Dedicated bike paths and small side roads with little traffic allow visitors to explore the rolling hills and quaint villages of Portugal’s countryside. You will love the orange-tiled rooftop houses, and the bright contrast it makes with the blueness of the oceans, and the small colourful fisherman villages by the Atlantic. It is a country with something for everyone. It features an excellent climate ranging from north, its greenest frontier, and the quaint and diverse middle, to the warm south. Cycling from the north to the south helps you see, and appreciate all of its diverse, wonderful areas. It is a treasure trove of natural wonders with magical Mediterranean landscapes in abundance.
The most surprising discovery of all in Portugal is its food. Head to the coast for the freshest seafood – squid, octopus, giant prawns, oysters and crab; or inland for fabulous old country recipes and exquisite peasant fare: delicious cheeses, locally-cured hams, succulent cuts of pork and wild boar straight from the forests. What’s more, you can wash your meal down with wonderfully earthy wines, none of which cost a bomb. All after a long day cycling !
This is a supported tour – at the start of the day, when the group sets off biking, your kit bag will be loaded into the support vehicle and transported to the next overnight halt. The van will meet you to feed and water you, but you are free to cycle at your own pace, with the support vehicle never far away. We must stress that apart from the emergency tool kit and spares that you would take on any day ride, you will not be required to carry any luggage. Stunning scenery, atmospheric overnight accommodation and a magnificent route make this an unforgettable cycling holiday experience. Average 70 miles per day. This is a trip for keen road cyclists who enjoy the challenge of climbs and descents day after day.
• DISTANCE – Approximately 500 miles
• BIKES – Ride your own bike ! Your bike collected from you, then delivered back to you after the tour. (Extra £30 each way)
• FULLY SUPPORTED TOUR, with 7 days cycling, averaging approximately 70 miles a day. 8 nights accommodation. Cycling leader plus support vehicle carrying luggage.
• ACTIVITY LEVEL – 8/10 – challenging. Great cycling, fantastic scenery
• FLIGHT – Fly into Porto Saturday 3rd October 2020 (or earlier). Fly out of Faro Sunday 11th October (or later).
You need to arrive in Porto before 17.00h on Saturday 3rd, as the minibus leaves the airport at 17.00h to take us up to Chaves, which is 2 hours away.
We start in the North around Chaves, on the Spanish border. Then we cycle along the eastern side of Portugal, through beautiful quiet country roads. Gradually moving down the country, we finish on the south coast, well known as the Algarve.
The first four days are as tough as any of my tours. Climbing around 7000 ft each day, often cycling at over 3000ft above sea level, up climbs of over 8 miles long, the first 4 days are very tough. The last three days are much easier, having left the mountains behind, and gradually making our way finally down to the southern coast. The first four days though make this a tour DEFINITELY not for the casual cyclist, but for someone who wants to experience great cycling, both up and down, superb surfaces, and some late sunshine. It’s a GREAT tour.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD
This is a small hotel/B&B based holiday. Prices are based on sharing in twin rooms.
The single room supplement is £350
WE TRANSPORT YOUR BIKE IN A CUSTOMISED VAN SPECIALLY TRANSFORMED TO SAFELY CARRY YOUR PRIZED POSSESSION !
We recommend a road bike with 25 to 32 mm tyres. Most people ride carbon road bikes. Mountain bikes are NOT suitable. The most important thing is that the bike functions properly and that you are comfortable riding it. You should make sure that your bike has suitable gears as there are some steep hills on parts of the route. You should also make sure that you are able to carry some spare food and extra clothing with you on the bike.
We believe your tour experience will be enhanced if you are able to ride a bike you are comfortable and familiar with and, with that in mind, we will transport your bike to and from the start/finish of a tour. This just for an extra £30 each way.
Our support vehicles are adapted to carry bikes in a safe and secure manner which gives you the peace of mind that you will be ready to get cycling on day one without any rebuilding of bikes required. Should collection by our support vehicle not be possible we will use the services of a specialist courier company.
The cost of cycle collection and delivery is £30 each way.
If you would prefer, we can arrange bike hire – please contact us for further details
