Our August Lands End to John O’Groats tour in 2022
It will be great fun, staying in some great places, along the length of the UK. NOT TO BE MISSED !
It is the ultimate cycle ride challenge in the UK, ridden over 13 days ! Its the iconic tour, that all UK cyclists often feel they have to complete. Its tough, its challenging and its extremely satisfying when you finish. Not everyone can cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats.
BUT, this is not a ride in the park, and I do not take the easy route ! We climb 6 of Simon Warren’s ‘100 Greatest Climbs in the UK’, that includes up to Dartmoor, Cheddar Gorge, Fleet Moss, Hartside, The Spittal of Glenshee AND THE LECHT…… The Lecht gets 10 out of 10 from Simon Warren !! We cross the Severn Bridge, the Clifton Bridge, the Forth Bridge
We predominantly use hotels. You need a little luxury after cycling that distance each day!
Lands End to John O’Groats (LEJOG), cycling the length of mainland Britain. The beauty of Cornwall and Devon, Golden Valleys of Wales, rolling hills of Shropshire, through the Midlands and up to the rugged hills of the Borders, to the magnificence of Scotland. This tour has everything! Over bridges and lanes, through towns and cities. It is the biggest cycling challenge that most people will undertake in the UK. It’s an amazing journey.
This is a very tough tour. If you are not a regular club cyclist, you need to put in at least six months training before attempting this tour.
• Distance – Approximately 1000 miles.
• Dates – Meet up in Penzance on Saturday 30th July, leaving Inverness on Saturday 13th August, 2022
• Bikes – Ride your own bike! Your own bike collected from you, then delivered back to you after the tour. (Extra cost of £45 each way)
• Fully supported Tour, with 13 days cycling, averaging approximately 75 miles a day. 14 nights accommodation. Cycling leader plus support vehicle carrying luggage.
• Activity Level – 8/10 – Quite Challenging, but manageable with lots of training and a lot of determination!
The Route
This is a fully supported holiday with a tour leader and a vehicle to carry all the luggage and provide additional assistance if necessary. The trip is designed to enable you to complete the UK ‘End to End’, while following a route that allows you to see much of the diversity of the UK mainland, while keeping to minor roads as much as possible. The total distance is just under 1000 miles, and the daily mileage is 75-80 miles. There are no rest days. You do need to ensure that you are prepared for the trip. Cornwall and Devon are tough, with sharp hills, while Scotland surprisingly is much easier. Generally in Scotland your ride around the mountains, not over them, but there are exceptions of course!
Start
The ride starts at Lands End. You will meet up with your tour at the hotel we stay in at Penzance on the starting Saturday of the tour. After staying in Penzance on the Saturday night we will take you and your bikes to Lands End for the start of the tour, early on the Sunday morning.
FINISH
The ride ends at John O’Groats, 13 days later, arriving there on the Friday of that week. We will transport you after the tour to Inverness, where we will stay that evening. You depart the Saturday morning at your leisure. There are services south from Inverness station, or we can get you to the airport at Inverness if you are flying.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD
This is a hotel accommodation based ride. You need a little comfort after a hard days ride. Food supplied all day long, to fuel that bike along the road. You just buy your own evening meal, although suitable places to eat are arranged. The price is based on shared accommodation. Single Supplement is £550. If you are travelling by yourself where you request to share I will use my best endeavours to pair you with someone of the same gender, but this cannot be guaranteed. Matching will be done strictly in the order bookings are received and where I am unable to make a match I will notify you in advance and the Single Supplement will apply. You should be aware that the majority of my customers opt for single occupancy.
BIKES
We recommend a touring bike or a road bike with 25 to 28 mm tyres. Mountain bikes are NOT suitable. The most important thing is that the bike functions properly and that you are comfortable riding it. You should make sure that your bike has suitable gears as there are some steep hills on parts of the route. You should also make sure that you are able to carry some spare food and extra clothing with you on the bike.[/one_half]
Bike Transport
We believe your tour experience will be enhanced if you are able to ride a bike you are comfortable and familiar with and, with that in mind, we can transport your bike to and from the start/finish of a tour. Our support vehicles are adapted to carry bikes in a safe and secure manner which gives you the peace of mind that you will be ready to get cycling on day one without any rebuilding of bikes required. Should collection by our support vehicle not be possible we will use the services of a specialist courier company.
The total cost of bike transport is £90 per bike. That’s £45 to take it to Lands End and another £45 to bring it back from Inverness, and deliver it to your door. If you would prefer, we can arrange bike hire – please contact us for further details.
Weather
The weather can change from hour to hour, so be prepared to use a variety of clothing, but the support vehicle will always be nearby.
