Bavaria – Story-book castles bequeathed by an oddball king poke through dark forest, cowbells tinkle in flower-filled meadows, the thwack of palm on Lederhosen accompanies the clump of frothy stein on timber bench, and medieval walled towns go about their time-warped business (Lonely Planet). Experience it all as we cycle from Frankfurt, along ‘The Romantic Road’, and then on towards Munich.
This is a small hotel based holiday. Prices are based on sharing in twin rooms. Single Supplement for this tour is £350.
Starting from just outside Frankfurt, we cycle east towards Wurzburg, where we join ‘The Romantic Road’. This is an old trade route, full of medieval towns and castles. The Romantic Road opens up a wealth of European history, art and culture to travellers. On the way from north to south, the landscape changes from river valleys, fertile agricultural land, forests and meadows to dramatic mountain scenery: from Würzburg and wine, the Tauber Valley and Rothenburg, via the Ries, Lechfeld and Pfaffenwinkel districts to the castles of King Ludwig. We then leave this route and travel back towards Munich, the Bavarian Capital.
WE TRANSPORT YOUR BIKE IN A CUSTOMISED VAN SPECIALLY TRANSFORMED TO SAFELY CARRY YOUR PRIZED POSSESSION ! £45 each way (England and Wales. £55 each way from Scotland).
We recommend a road bike with 25 to 32 mm tyres. Mountain bikes are NOT suitable. The most important thing is that the bike functions properly and that you are comfortable riding it. You should make sure that your bike has suitable gears as there are some steep hills on parts of the route. You should also make sure that you are able to carry some spare food and extra clothing with you on the bike.
